Good Descriptive Topics

  • A Dream Or Nightmare:  We all have a few dreams that we remember vividly because of the way they made us feel.  Use this to write a descriptive essay.  Close your eyes and start writing down everything about it, where you were, how you feel, and so on.
  • A Place: We have been to so many places but some places are easier to describe than others.  Pick your favorite place and write a description of that place, if it’s close you can go there and observe the surroundings and take notes on the five senses there.
  • A Fear:  We all have one thing that scares us.  Using a fear in your essay can be different, you can describe where you go that fear, how it makes you feel, and make sure to use your senses to describe ever aspect of that fear.
  • A Daydream:  Have you ever caught yourself staring out a window or at the blackboard and then realizing that you weren’t there for a little bit? What were thinking about, what were you picturing in your head?  This would be fun to do because our minds wonder all the time and you can start to write down what you were thinking about for your essay.
  • Favorite book/movie/TV show:  What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show?  Can you pick one and describe it to your reader?  If you answered yes to the last question, then this might be the topic for you.  Take your favorite book, movie, or TV show and describe it in detail to your reader.  This one is fun because you get to do it on something you like and you might get the reader to read or watch one of your favorites.
