Violence Prevention In The African American Community

There are many special interest groups that have worked tirelessly to help the African American community and prevent rising violence within their community. Special interest groups will try to advocate for a special cause. Often, this earns such groups a bad name because they might be working to obtain special or highly beneficial treatment for themselves and none others.

Special interest groups, however, will also include ethnic groups fighting for equality, or others organizations working to shape or change governmental policies that negatively affect them. There are many examples of political parties and special interest groups, and a few that illustrate the power that such groups can obtain through their efforts include: League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) – established in 1929 to combat discrimination against Mexican Americans. It appeared at a time when more and more Mexican immigrants were obtaining American citizenship. It is the result of several smaller groups with similar goals coming together to simply put an end to the political, economic and even cultural discrimination faced by these citizens. National Rifle Association (NRA) – focused on protecting the rights inherent in the Second Amendment, the NRA was established in 1871 and is a massive and politically powerful entity in the modern world.

Often, the group is connected to controversial contemporary issues strictly because of the subject matter – guns of all kinds. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) - started in 1909 with the mission to protect the political, educational, social, and economic rights of everyone. It is also to get rid of racial discrimination and hatred. The group is still viewed as a well-informed and extremely politically active. It distributes annual awards that are given strictly to well-deserving African Americans, but the organization is also very active where its advocacy is concerned. These include such areas as economic opportunity, education, health, justice and civic engagement. Thanks to the efforts by the NAACP and other special interest groups violence that has continued to thrive in local communities has been targeted. Crimes have been hindered and those convicted have received the support and counseling that they need. Recidivism has been reduced as well because of these efforts.

Special interest groups have contributed greatly to reducing discrimination and violence against others. They have also ensured that violence within different communities has been hindered though these same efforts. With their efforts and the efforts of local community members violence can be thwarted.
